Newcastle's winless start to the Premier League campaign continued as they lost 3-0 to Chelsea at St James' Park on Saturday.

Reece James scored the first two goals as he fired in a sensational strike to seal to open the scoring, later doubling his tally after following up on a rebound from Ruben Loftus-Cheek's blocked shot. Karl Darlow then gave away a penalty and Jorginho smashed the ball down the middle of the goal to round off the scoring.

Graeme Jones named an unchanged XI from the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace last week and his side battled hard to keep the Blues at bay for a large chunk of the match, although they ended up coming away with nothing to show for it.

One Newcastle player who let his boss down badly was left-back Matt Ritchie. Whilst he was far from the only one who did not show the best of himself against Thomas Tuchel's side, he is currently keeping Jamal Lewis out of the team and he has not shown enough in his performances to warrant his selection.

The Northern Irishman has only played six minutes of Premier League football this season and may be wondering what will need to happen for him to be given a chance after watching this display from Ritchie, who struggled defensively and in possession as Chelsea ran riot in the second half at St James' Park.

Facing his own goal, he was not good enough. As per SofaScore, he failed to make a single tackle, interception or block throughout the game, with four clearances being his only defensive contribution.

He was also caught out of position for both of James' goals, with Ritchie unable to stop the England international. Mistakes at the back can give up goals and he played a key role in Chelsea being able to secure the three points due to his failure to track James' runs, whilst also not making any tackles or interceptions.

Jones will surely be frustrated with Ritchie's performance on the ball, too. As per SofaScore, he completed a measly 50% of his attempted passes (just seven out of 14) and failed to complete any of three long pass attempts. He gifted possession back to Chelsea far too easily to go along with his slack defending at the other end.

Therefore, the interim Newcastle manager may well be feeling let down by the former Bournemouth man. This display from the Scotland international could now open the door for Lewis to be handed his first league start of the season next weekend to offer him the chance to prove that he can do a better job at left-back.
