Newcastle United have struggled to find a consistent source of goals outside of Callum Wilson on Tyneside over the last 18 months.

He is currently the club's top goalscorer, in February, with six league goals and is currently out injured, with Allan Saint-Maximin's tally of five the next most.

Last season, Wilson found the back of the net 12 times and was the leading scorer as he was the only player who managed to hit double digits.

The Magpies could look to bring in another striker to compete with Chris Wood and Wilson next season in an attempt to add more of a goal threat to their side. If they do that then they may look to the Championship to see who could make the step up to the top-flight.

Should they decide to do that, they would see a very familiar face lighting up the division as Aleksandr Mitrovic scored his 31st goal of the campaign over the weekend. He has already matched the goalscoring record for a season in the Championship, with several months still left to play.

This means that he is on the verge of securing the best individual season, in terms of goals, by any player in the history of the competition, suggesting that he is ready to make the step up. He has 38 direct goal contributions in 28 matches for Fulham, with 31 goals and seven assists, and is showing Newcastle the player they missed out on.

Former Toon owner Mike Ashley had a howler as he opted to sell him to the Cottagers in 2018 and he has since scored 84 goals and registered 18 assists in 161 matches for the London-based outfit. This includes an 11-goal haul in the top-flight in the 2018/19 campaign, which showed that he is capable of delivering at the top level.

He has also found the back of the net a phenomenal 44 times in 69 caps for Serbia, showing his knack for goals at international level as well as in the Premier League and Championship.

Therefore, Ashley and Newcastle endured a disaster over the tank who could have been a major player for the Magpies if they had given him more time. Whilst playing for the Toon, Mitrovic was dubbed as being "reminiscent" of "Les Ferdinand or an Alan Shearer" with his number nine play in the Premier League by Jamie Carragher.

He is now showing, albeit in the Championship at the moment, that he can score goals at a blistering rate and Newcastle could do with a player of his quality to bolster their current squad. This is why the club had a nightmare over him previously and will now be regretting their decision to let him go.
