Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has been questioned following his performance in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday at Wembley.

How poor is Wilson's recent form?

The 31-year-old striker is struggling in all competitions with just one goal to his name since October which came in the recent draw against West Ham United.

And the game against Manchester United on Sunday saw the Englishman draw another blank as the Magpies tasted cup final disappointment in the capital.

Wilson lasted the full 90 minutes of the game, however, Alexander Isak was introduced at half-time in an attempt to sharpen Eddie Howe's attack.

Speaking on his YouTube channel after the match, journalist Craig Hope has shared his concerns over what he is seeing from the striker and has suggested the Swede should have started ahead of him:

(3:50) "If we're going to be honest here, Callum Wilson almost looks as if he's put absolutely everything into getting into that World Cup squad. You know he put his heart and soul into that and he's come back since the World Cup and he almost looks spent mentally [and] physically he just doesn't look like the same player at all."

Should Newcastle replace Wilson?

Over the years, Wilson has proven himself to be a reliable outlet in front of goal for the Magpies having returned 27 goals in his 68 appearances for the Tyneside club.

However, the striker's goals have certainly come with the caveat of having a dreadful injury record, frequently seeing him sidelined through various issues.

And considering he has been able to keep himself injury free since the World Cup, his one-goal return will have come as a significant concern for all at St. James' Park.

His goal drought has coincided with Newcastle's dip in form over recent weeks in which they have won just one of their last six league games with Wilson playing a part.

And with Newcastle battling for a spot in the top four, it is apparent the striker is currently not providing Howe with the consistency needed.

Albeit holding two games in hand, Tottenham Hotspur have now pulled clear of the Magpies in fourth spot and Liverpool are now just five points behind.

With a lot still to play for in the remaining months of the campaign, it does feel as if Wilson could now potentially be playing for his future at Newcastle.

One goal since October is simply not good enough for a club who have the big ambitions of Newcastle under their new ownership.

Isak has shown a lot of promise since arriving on Tyneside so it will be interesting to see whether Howe possibly looks to make a change up top for their next game against Manchester City.
