Newcastle United handed injury boost ahead of Man City clash

After taking on Liverpool in their previous Premier League outing and falling to a 1-0 defeat, Newcastle United have another tough test ahead of them tomorrow as they travel to the Etihad Stadium to take on title-chasing Manchester City.

Heading into Sunday’s showdown against Pep Guardiola’s side, it seems as though the travelling Magpies have been handed a major injury boost which could end up having a big impact on the game.

What’s the news?

Speaking in his latest press conference, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe touched upon the current fitness situation regarding Callum Wilson and the possibility of the striker being involved in tomorrow’s showdown.

The 44-year-old said of the ex-Bournemouth marksman: “He’s trained all week. He’s trained very well, he had two really tough days & he’s come through them well. He’s put a lot of work in to get to this point. He looks in a good place and there’s a good chance he’ll be involved on Sunday.”

Who cost Newcastle the most?

The striker has been out of action since late December with a calf injury, prior to which he had scored six goals in 15 league appearances for the Toon.

To further highlight how much of an attacking threat Wilson is for Newcastle, only Allan Saint-Maximin (1.9) has a higher average for shots per game in the Premier League this season at the Tyneside club than the 30-year-old’s 1.8.

Great news for Howe

Taking into account how long Wilson has been out of action, it would be great for everyone connected with Newcastle, particularly the supporters and Howe, to see the attacker back out on the pitch at some point before the season comes to an end.

Are you excited to see Callum Wilson return to action?

No

Should the Englishman finally make a return to action in Manchester tomorrow, if he can hit the ground running and cause some problems for City’s defence, he could give the Magpies a big chance of potentially picking up a positive result.

However, with the threat of relegation well and truly behind them and with Wilson having been out of action for so long, it may not be wise for Howe to put him in from the start and potentially risk further damage.
