Journalist Craig Hope has slammed Newcastle United striker Chris Wood after his 'poor' performance in the club's most recent game.

What's the word?

Over the weekend, two goals from Josh Windass were enough to hand Sheffield Wednesday a surprise 2-1 home win over the Magpies in the FA Cup.

Alexander Isak returned to the starting line up having recovered from a hamstring injury that has kept him out since September but only lasted 45 minutes.

Wood then came on for the Swede but couldn't help his team pick up a positive result and even 'missed the best chance' of the game when fluffing his lines after Joelinton set him up.

After the game, while talking on his YouTube channel, Hope didn't sound impressed by the Kiwi. Indeed, he said (5:23): "Chris Wood, you know, for as good as he was down at Leicester on Boxing Day, in the last couple [games] he's been poor.

"And he came on here today for Newcastle and missed a glorious chance to force a replay there late on. And I think his confidence will perhaps suffer for that.

"And that's a shame because that came down at Leicester, the first game back in the Premier League, he played very well. And since then he has reverted back to the player who does look like he wants for belief on occasion in a Newcastle shirt.”

Chances running out

Wood isn't the first-choice striker at the club anyway way, he Isak and Callum Wilson preferred when fit. However, injuries did mean he was afforded a start against Leicester City recently.

The 31-year-old, who was given a 5/10, who scored in the game but has failed to hit the back of the net or provide an assist since. And so it feels as though he probably hasn't quite done enough to keep his spot in the team when the other two forwards are fit to play.

As per SofaScore, his display in the FA Cup was particularly disappointing. Indeed, he finished the game with a lowly 6.2 match rating, having missed one big chance, lost the ball six times, and mustered just one shot on target.

All in all, not a good day for the New Zealander.
