Newcastle United could be presented with a big opportunity this month to sign their long-term target Youri Tielemans from Leicester City.

What's the latest?

It has now been reported for a number of months that Newcastle hold a strong interest in the Belgian midfielder following the arrival of PIF on Tyneside.

However, there is also the belief that the Premier league leaders, Arsenal, are another side that would be keen to bring in the 25-year-old.

Tielemans is now playing into the final months of his contract at the King Power Stadium with the Belgian potentially able to leave on a free in the summer.

And speaking on the House of Champions YouTube channel, the reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed the midfielder remains a player who the Toon are "well informed on":

(14:50) "Youri Tielemans, out of contract with Leicester in the summer could be a big opportunity in the market. Newcastle are well informed on the situation but again at the moment they are really quiet in the negotiation on the club side because they want to make sure it is the best opportunity and the best moment to sign the player."

Belgian bargain?

Tielemans has now been an established name in the Premier League for a number of years following his move from Monaco back in 2019.

The midfielder has already racked up 138 appearances in the Premier League in which he has returned 21 goals and 20 assists (via Transfermarkt).

And given his contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign, it will be interesting to see if the Foxes would be open to a potential offer for the 25-year-old this month or whether the will decide to take the financial blow in the summer.

Back in November, Brendan Rodgers suggested the club were looking to offer Tielemans a new deal and that an answer would be provided in the coming months:

"I will continue to work and develop his game here for however long that is. If he is to sign another deal and continue his journey at Leicester, we will see in the coming months," he said.

However, the potential lure of Champions League football possibly on offer for next season with Arsenal and the Toon could prove a major attraction with the Foxes currently slumped in 13th spot of the table.

In comparison to Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes, the Belgian has provided an impressive return in a struggling Leicester side this season with Tielemans providing more shot-creating actions per 90 (via Fbref).

Tielemans - hailed as an "underrated" player - has also provided the same number of tackles as the Brazilian but has outperformed Guimaraes with a higher percentage of successful dribbles.

So it does seem as if Tielemans is a player who could certainly add to the Newcastle midfield, but it will remain to be seen whether the Magpies make a move this month for the Belgian.
