Newcastle submit final offer for Watford’s Joao Pedro

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their pursuit of Joao Pedro in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Magpies have made an offer worth up to £30m to sign the Brazilian attacker.

He Tweeted: “Excl: Newcastle have sent Watford verbal, final proposal for João Pedro after two turned down in the last few days. It’s worth £25m plus £5m add-ons, still verbal. Final decision up to the Pozzo family now.”

This came after journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that the player is keen on the move and that the Hornets are looking for a fee of £30m, saying:

“Watford really want to keep João Pedro. But Pedro wants the Newcastle move. He could miss the trip to Preston today with an ankle injury. Newcastle have denied they placed a formal bid of £25m following a rejected £20m offer. Watford want £30m. NUFC won’t go that high.”

Dan Ashworth’s magic

Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth must now work his magic to get this deal over the line in the coming weeks, just as he did with Sven Botman.

The Magpies beat European giants AC Milan to the signing of the Dutchman from Lille earlier this summer and the player admitted that a move to Tyneside was more attractive to him, saying:

“Ultimately, Newcastle United’s great project, in combination with playing in the Premier League, was the deciding factor. That last one has been a dream my whole life. AC Milan also gave me a good feeling, but Newcastle United felt just a little better in the end.”

This suggests that Ashworth played a key role in the signing as he was able to persuade Botman into thinking that the club’s project was better than that of Milan’s.

The former Brighton chief must now use his magic touch to tempt Watford into parting ways with Pedro. He has offered the Hornets £5m less than what they are asking for but has brought it to £30m in add-ons, and he must now convince them that those clauses are achievable.

How many 2021/22 Premier League goals did Newcastle score?

Pedro, who has been dubbed a “lovely player” by journalist Josh Bunting, has the potential to be a great signing for the Magpies in the future.

At the age of 20, he has already racked up 14 goals and 78 appearances for Watford – including three goals in 31 Premier League outings – and this suggests that he has the scope to develop into a top player given what he has already achieved before his 21st birthday.

The forward also suits Eddie Howe’s pressing style as he ranks in the 84th percentile amongst players in his position for pressures per 90 in Europe’s top five leagues over the last 365 days. This means that he is well above average when it comes to closing down opposition players, making him an ideal player for the manager’s system, precisely why Ashworth must work his magic on this deal.
