Newcastle: Alex Crook shuts down Armando Broja talk

There has been an update regarding Newcastle United‘s reported interest in Armando Broja…

What’s the word?

According to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook – speaking to GIVEMESPORT – the 20-year-old is not a player that the Magpies are in for this summer, with the Albania international’s wage demands also likely to be an issue.

The transfer insider revealed: “I’m not convinced by the Newcastle links to Broja, to be honest. I’ve been told Howe doesn’t want him. I’m there to be proved wrong, but I’m told he’s not on their list.

“I think he wants too much money as well. There’s a certain wage structure in place at Newcastle that he would probably try and break.”

The 14-cap brute – who has been the subject of interest from fellow Premier League side Everton – could reportedly command a fee of around £50m, with West Ham United having seen a £30m offer rebuffed earlier this summer.

Could have exploded

That news will no doubt come as a real source of frustration for Newcastle supporters, with Broja undoubtedly a player who could have been a notable coup for the northeast side, particularly amid their ongoing search to land new attacking additions.

Having “exploded” on loan at Southampton last term – in the words of his national team assistant coach Sergio Porrini – the 6 foot 3 brute could well have kicked on again for the Tynesiders were he to sign, with manager Eddie Howe seemingly set to miss out on a real talent.

The Slough-born ace scored nine goals in all competitions in what was a real breakthrough campaign at St Mary’s last term, having previously fired in 11 goals during a sparkling loan stint at Eredivisie outfit, Vitesse Arnhem the year prior.

Previously dubbed “devastating” by Porrini, the £19.8m-rated gem caught the eye due to his mature performances in leading the line in what was his debut top-flight campaign, showcasing an impressive blend of strength and speed to prove a real handful for opposition defences.

With Howe currently relying on injury-prone Callum Wilson to lead the line – and with £25m dud Chris Wood in reserve – it has seemingly become imperative to bring in a new centre-forward before the September deadline, with Broja undoubtedly a figure who could have filled that void.

Alas, it looks as if Newcastle are set to turn their attention elsewhere in the hunt for a new striker, with the highly-rated youngster set to have a role to play under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge this season, having featured off the bench in the Blues’ opening day victory over Frank Lampard’ Toffees.

His role would no doubt have been more prominent, however, had he joined Howe and co this summer, with Broja seemingly a figure who could have ‘exploded’ on the St James’ Park stage.
