Newcastle prioritising deal to sign Maxwel Cornet

A claim has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Maxwel Cornet in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Journalist Dean Jones has revealed that the Ivorian – who has a £17.5m release clause – is now one of the club’s top targets as he would be able to slot straight into Eddie Howe’s XI.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s definitely one Newcastle are prioritising because he’s available and they think he would make an instant impact in that team, and he’d be ready to go from day one.

“He’s also really good value compared to other players in his position with that sort of quality. So he’s shot up Newcastle’s wanted list recently.”

Forget Moussa Diaby

The claim that the club want him because he would be able to hit the ground running in the Premier League is an interesting one.

Bayer Leverkusen winger Diaby was reportedly their top target prior to him opting to remain in the Bundesliga and Cornet, on paper, appears to be the safer option.

Whilst the Frenchman’s statistics in Germany were sublime in 2021/22 – with 13 goals and 12 assists – you only have to look to Kai Havertz and Timo Werner to see how difficult the transition to England can be.

The former managed 12 goals and six assists in his final campaign in the Bundesliga before scoring four and assisting three in 27 Premier League matches in his first season for Chelsea. Werner made the same transition and went from 28 goals and eight assists to finding the back of the net six times and setting up eight.

This means that the German striker’s production dropped by 61.1% and Havertz’s went down, coincidently, by the same amount.

That does not mean that Diaby would certainly not be as impressive as his stats suggest but it does highlight that he would be a riskier signing than someone who is proven in the Premier League.

Therefore, supporters must now forget about the Frenchman as Cornet is a player who has shown that he has what it takes to perform in England.

Journalist Josh Bunting dubbed him “top-class” and “underrated” throughout the 2021/22 campaign, whilst also claiming that he is a “cheat code“, as he caught the eye at Burnley.

In 21 starts, the 25-year-old scored nine goals and provided one assist – despite starting the campaign at left-back for the Clarets.

Meanwhile, no Newcastle winger managed more than five goals in the top flight. Allan Saint-Maximin topped the charts with a handful, whilst Ryan Fraser found the back of the net twice and Miguel Almiron could only muster up one strike.

Cornet would, therefore, be a proven upgrade on what the Magpies currently have in the wide areas when it comes to scoring goals, which would add a greater goal threat to Howe’s XI this season and is why fans must forget about Diaby and get excited by the prospect of the Ivorian wizard coming in.
