Newcastle United have made three signings so far this summer but have been linked with many players in the transfer window, and a new update has now emerged from a reliable source on a potential transfer target.

What's the latest?

Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Paris Saint Germain and Georginio Wijnaldum have come to an agreement for the player to leave the Ligue 1 champions this summer, giving Newcastle the green light to sign him.

Romano tweeted: "Paris Saint-Germain and Gini Wijnaldum have decided to part ways this summer, confirmed. Work in progress to find new club as soon as possible, PSG are prepared to loan him out in the next days or weeks."

It was reported ahead of the January transfer window that Newcastle had shown an interest in reuniting with their former midfielder after he was offered out to a number of clubs for a potential loan move.

It'd be a big coup

Newcastle have come a long way from the days when Wijnaldum was occupying a role in the Magpies' midfield, with a huge takeover, a new direction and a new chapter for the club, but there is no doubt that the Dutch midfielder would be a big coup for Eddie Howe's side.

The 31-year-old spent just 12 months on Tyneside, making the move to Liverpool when Newcastle were relegated to the Championship in 2016, and he went on to thrive under Jurgen Klopp.

Wijnaldum, who was dubbed "sensational" by the Reds manager, went onto win the Premier League and Champions League on Merseyside, tallying an impressive 237 appearances, scoring 22 goals and delivering 16 assists during his time at Anfield until his contract expired in 2021.

The £21m-valued Netherlands international then made the move to PSG on a free transfer but his role in the team has been far from appreciated over in France, starting just 18 league games under Mauricio Pochettino, so it is clear that the move to Paris hasn't been a hugely beneficial one for either the player or the club.

Howe has begun his rebuild of the Newcastle squad, and adding a player with Wijnaldum's Premier League experience and winning mentality could be a big coup for the Magpies manager.

With that in mind, the signing of the 31-year-old could be a great move for Newcastle if they want to bolster their midfield options ahead of their mission to climb  into the top half of the table next season.
