The January transfer window is open for business and Newcastle United may yet join the party by adding to their squad before the end of the month.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe could want to strengthen his side to improve their chances of holding on to a Champions League spot between now and the end of the campaign.

One area in which the club could upgrade in is their options in the wide areas, as they currently have a number of players who have struggled in those positions.

Ryan Fraser has failed to produce a single goal or assist in eight Premier League appearances this term and only managed five direct goal contributions in 27 top-flight matches last season.

Howe must now reignite the club's interest in Villarreal attacker Arnaut Danjuma this month as the winger arriving at St. James' Park could allow Fraser to depart.

Earlier this season, Calciomercatoweb reported that Newcastle and Chelsea were both interested in signing the forward.

The Daily Mail recently claimed that Aston Villa, Tottenham, and Everton are among the clubs keen on a deal for Danjuma, who is available on a loan deal due to a 'breakdown in relations' with some of his teammates.

Chronicle Live previously revealed that the £22m winger admires Howe and is still on good terms with the English head coach after their time together at Bournemouth in the Premier League.

This indicates that the Netherlands international could hit the ground running, which is ideal for a January signing with no pre-season to work with, as he already has a relationship with the manager and knows how the boss wants to play football.

Although Danjuma has struggled at times this season, with two goals and zero assists in six La Liga starts, the 25-year-old's form throughout the 2021/22 campaign suggests that he could be a big upgrade on Fraser.

The winger produced 10 goals and three assists in 23 La Liga appearances last term, whilst also plundering six goals and one assist in 11 Champions League matches.

This means that he scored twice as many European goals last season as Fraser has goals (six) in any competition across 59 matches for the Magpies.

Danjuma's form for Villarreal in 2021/22 and his pre-existing working relationship with Howe suggests that he could make an instant impact at Newcastle and improve their options out wide.

The gem, who ex-Premier League striker Kevin Phillips lauded as a "nightmare" for defenders, could offer far more than Fraser does in the final third and allow the Magpies to ditch the Scottish international by replacing him with the Dutch dynamo.
