An update has emerged on Newcastle United target Matthias Ginter, regarding his future at Borussia Monchengladbach...

What's the talk?

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has quoted the defender as stating that he will depart the Bundesliga club at the end of the season.

He tweeted: "Matthias Ginter announces he’s gonna leave Borussia Mönchengladbach as free agent in June: “I’m not extending the contract with Borussia. I’ll start a new chapter in my career, the decision has been made”."

Newcastle are reportedly set to battle it out with Serie A giants Inter for his signature on a pre-contract deal in January.

Delight

Newcastle fans will surely be delighted with this news as it appears to come as a major boost to the club's chances of landing him. He is out of contract next summer and has now made it official that he will be leaving on a free transfer instead of extending his current terms with the German outfit.

This means that the Magpies could pin him down to a pre-contract next month ahead of bringing him in for absolutely nothing, which could save the Eddie Howe millions in comparison to trying to sign a player who has a long-term deal with their current club.

They could, therefore, be getting a bargain because of Ginter's decision, especially given his impressive form this season.

He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.97 in the Bundesliga, winning 68% of his duels over the course of the campaign. Last term, he averaged a score of 7.11 and also won 68% of his duels, showing his consistency over a long period of time at the top level.

German legend Lothar Matthaus previously heaped praise on the defender. He told Sport Bild, via Bundesliga.com: "Ginter has become a leader at the back, in a similar way to Ramos at Real. He doesn't just give instructions to his teammates, but leads them as well. That's what Ginter is doing really well at the moment. He reminds me of Ramos."

Newcastle fans would surely love to see a player of his quality come through the door at St. James' Park, both because of his apparent leadership and his ability to perform consistently at centre-back, and that is why they will be delighted with this latest update on his future in Germany.
