Newcastle could land best signing since Bruno in Hakan Calhanoglu

Newcastle United have less than 24 hours left to finish any remaining business they want to do in the summer transfer window.

The Magpies have made four signings so far this summer, bringing in Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Matt Targett, and Alexander Isak.

Eddie Howe has been given the funds to strengthen his team and it has resulted in a strong start to the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, losing one game so far.

However, he may look to make further additions to this squad before the window slams shut later today, to push the side further up the table.

One player the club have been linked with in the final days of the window is Inter attacking midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, who is reportedly available for the right price.

By bringing the Turkey international, who Stefano Pioli once dubbed a “leader“, to St. James’ Park, Newcastle could land their best signing since Bruno Guimaraes in January.

The Toon brought the Brazilian in from Lyon in the winter market at the start of 2022 and he had a huge impact on the team, helping to lead the side to safety in 2021/22. He took little time settling into life in England as he caught the eye in the Premier League almost instantly.

In his first five months with the Magpies, Guimaraes was the standout player for the club as he averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.25 across 17 appearances. He scored five goals and created three ‘big chances’ as he showed off his skills in attack, whilst also making 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game.

No Newcastle player with more than five starts over the course of the campaign averaged a higher rating than him, and he was the only player with 10+ starts who averaged a score higher than 6.98.

This indicates that he was the best player in the squad as he consistently performed at an extremely high level, which highlights how impressive the signing was.

How many 2021/22 Premier League goals did Newcastle score?

Calhanoglu could now come in this season and have a similar impact on the team after he enjoyed a phenomenal 2021/22 campaign with Inter in the Serie A.

The gem, who Carlo Garganese once hailed as a “world-class” set-piece taker, averaged a sensational SofaScore rating of 7.53 across 34 outings.

He scored seven goals and assisted 12 from midfield, whilst making 2.6 key passes per game and creating 13 ‘big chances’ in total. The 28-year-old also ranks in the 99th percentile among players in his position in Europe’s top five leagues over the last 365 days for xG assisted per 90, which means that he creates high-quality opportunities that give his teammates a great chance of scoring.

Meanwhile, no Newcastle player managed more than five assists or created more than 1.6 chances per match in the Premier League.

This suggests that the £150k-per-week magician would bring a level of creativity that is miles above anything Howe currently has at his disposal. His average rating of 7.53 in the Serie A last term also suggests that he could arrive and be the standout player in the squad, as no Toon gem averaged a score higher than 7.38 last term.

Therefore, he could come in and be an instant star for the Magpies – like Bruno did in January – and that is why the club must push to sign him on deadline day.
