Newcastle considering Ruben Loftus-Cheek swoop

An update has emerged on Chelsea gem Ruben Loftus-Cheek, regarding Newcastle’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Caught Offside, the Magpies are considering moves for Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek and the Blues midfielder ahead of the January transfer window.

The report claims that Newcastle want to sign two centre-backs and a central midfielder to bolster the squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.

Should Newcastle sign Loftus-Cheek?

It remains to be seen how much Loftus-Cheek would cost – if permanent – though, Transfermarkt currently value him at £16.2m.

Eddie Howe could seal an instant Newcastle masterclass by landing a deal for the 6 foot 2 titan in the upcoming window as he could be a terrific addition to the squad. He is a proven Premier League performer and could provide a lift to the team in terms of quality.

The 25-year-old has 114 top-flight appearances to his name in his career, playing for Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Fulham over the years. He has featured six times in the league for the Blues this season and played 30 games for Fulham last term.

In the 2020/21 campaign, former Fulham boss Scott Parker claimed that the Englishman was unplayable in certain games and credited his self-belief. He said:

“His self-belief is right there, his self-belief has to be there, he’s playing in the best league in the world and at times is unplayable in the best league in the world against teams and against players who are world-class.

Who scored more goals for Newcastle? An easy one to start...

“Ruben is going up against those players and really showing his quality, so for sure his self-belief is there.

“You look at his career and other than the period at Palace there hasn’t really been a sustained period (of first-team action), he was at Chelsea for a long time, probably had a few bit-parts, never really had a consistent run of games so I think that’s helped as well.”

This season, he has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 6.98 in six Premier League games for Chelsea – recording two assists in that time.

Meanwhile, Allan Saint-Maximin (7.11) is the only Newcastle player with a score higher than 6.87, suggesting that Loftus-Cheek could come in and instantly be one of the better players in the squad as he is currently performing to a higher standard than the majority of them.

Therefore, Howe could pull off an instant masterclass by adding the England international to his midfield ranks.

He has the experience and recent playing time to suggest that he could come in and hit the ground running, which could help the Magpies avoid the drop this season if he is able to positively influence games.
