A big claim has been made regarding PIF's summer transfer plans for Newcastle United...

What's the talk?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed that the Tyneside club are aiming to sign an elite-level attacker to bolster the club's firepower at the top end of the pitch.

When asked if they could snap up a major attacking talent from a European club, he told GIVEMESPORT: “Yeah, it’s definitely plausible. I mean, that’s literally where they’re aiming, and they’ve got the finances to back it up and actually sign them.

“And they’ve got the project that will convince someone to come and do it; someone will be tempted into that.”

This comes after The Telegraph reported that Benfica's Darwin Nunez was a target for the Toon before they moved on to alternative options, as the striker wants to play in the Champions League.

Supporters will be elated

Newcastle supporters will surely be left feeling elated by this claim from Jones, as it suggests that the club are going to be in the market for an exciting new forward.

Celebrating a goal in the stands, or indeed anywhere, is one of the best things about following a team, and it is attackers who generally score the majority of goals. Therefore, they are perhaps the most exciting signings. as they bring with them the prospect of sending the fans into raptures on a regular basis with their ability to find the net.

This is why Magpies supporters will be buzzing with PIF's aim to bring an elite-level attacker to the club, whether that is in the upcoming transfer window or further down the line.

Whilst Nunez is not an active target anymore, their interest in the Benfica centre-forward illustrates why their approach will get fans excited. The 22-year-old has scored 26 goals and provided four assists in 23 league starts this season, whilst Newcastle's top scorer is Callum Wilson with six goals.

This suggests that the Uruguayan would have been a major upgrade on what Eddie Howe currently has to call upon at the top end of the pitch and, along with Jones' comments, it indicates that the Tynesiders will be eyeing a player with a similar level of quality.

PIF are therefore attempting to add significant firepower to the 44-year-old's squad, and this will hopefully increase the number of goals that Newcastle score next season, duly giving the fans more moments to cherish throughout the campaign.
