Newcastle United and Aston Villa are poised to battle it out for Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson. Of course, having been relegated down to the Championship at the end of the 2019/20 campaign, the Cherries will now have to face the harsh reality of having most of their squad picked clean.
Even though Steve Bruce is working with a very limited budget this summer, according to the latest report from TalkSPORT, the Magpies are ready to sacrifice Matt Ritchie in order to land their target in front of the Villains.
The player himself is a former Bournemouth star and the club would be open to welcoming him back. Not only that but the same source confirmed that Ritchie wants the switch as well.
Alex Crook confirmed the suspicion and even stated the player is homesick so could very much be set for a grand return, despite the Cherries no longer playing in the Premier League. Here’s what he said for TalkSPORT: “I know Ritchie himself is perhaps a bit homesick up in the northeast and would love to come back down south. Bournemouth are realistic with the fee; when you’re relegated the value of your assets goes down straight away. I think £20m or £25m would be the package and Newcastle probably would value Matt Ritchie somewhere in the £5m to £10m region.”
Interestingly, it seems that Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring the situation but we don’t know how serious Jose Mourinho is in his attempt to snatch the player up.
At the moment, it’s looking likely to be a battle between Newcastle and Aston Villa.
If including Ritchie helps lower the price, then Bruce should be able to get an acceptable deal for Wilson over the line.
Of course, the fans might not like it. After all, the veteran has been a reliable servant to the Magpies’ badge and still has a bit to offer to the club.
