Newcastle United are reportedly among the Premier League clubs keeping an eye on Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez’s situation after it was revealed that the 24-year-old is looking to leave Anfield this summer.
According to 90min, the Englishman is a target for Newcastle, with the defender targeting a departure from Liverpool this summer amid little game-time so far this season.
Eddie Howe’s side have been linked with a plethora of different centre-backs since PIF bought the club in October, with Lille’s Sven Botman a heavily-linked target in January despite a move not materialising.
Although the Magpies appear set to face competition from numerous Premier League rivals for Gomez’s signature, the 24-year-old is certainly worth targeting.
Despite a tricky last year-and-a-half for the defender, the Englishman was instrumental in Liverpool’s 2019/20 title success, making 43 appearances across all competitions and very much being in England manager Gareth Southgate’s plans.
With the World Cup set to take place later this year, the 11-cap defender will certainly be keen on being reintegrated into the national team setup ahead of the tournament as England look to go one better than in the European Championship last summer.
Although their recent form has been exceptional, it has become clear that Newcastle will need to invest in their defence this summer if they are serious about pushing up the Premier League table in 2022/23.
Only three clubs have conceded more than the Magpies’ 47 goals so far this term, with the likes of Jamal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez all struggling for game-time since the January arrival of Dan Burn from Brighton.
The Englishman was signed after Newcastle missed out on first-choice target Botman, who was a kingpin in Lille’s Ligue 1 title triumph last season. However, it has also been suggested that the Magpies will look to go back in for the Dutchman.
Having seen little football since the 2019/20 campaign, it’s unfair to judge Gomez based on his limited appearances over the course of this season. However, when looking at his statistics from Liverpool’s title-winning campaign, it’s clear to see that he would be an excellent addition for the Tyneside club.
In his 22 Premier League appearances that season, the 24-year-old enjoyed a 88% passing accuracy and averaged 1.4 interceptions, 0.8 tackles and 2.1 clearances per game alongside keeping 12 clean sheets.
That season saw the defender receive plenty of praise from his manager Jurgen Klopp, who said in January 2020: “Since he is playing as a centre-half again – his natural position – together with Virg [il Van Dijk] there is exceptional. He is a sensational footballer, which is good.
“He has outstanding speed, which helps us a lot to keep our last line high; he is a really good challenger; good in one-on-one situations; football-wise, I said already, good.”
Gomez would certainly seem an excellent asset for Eddie Howe, although the Toon Army will seemingly need to fend off interest from numerous Premier League rivals if they are to land the defender’s signature in the summer.
