Newcastle believe they will land Joao Pedro deal

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their attempts to sign Joao Pedro in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Graeme Bailey has reported that the Magpies believe that they will eventually snap up the Brazilian centre-forward, but the move is not as far down the line as some reports have suggested.

He Tweeted: “Talks continue between Newcastle and Watford over Joao Pedro. Fee not yet agreed, but belief on both sides deal will get done.”

Luke Edwards has backed this up by stating that “multiple sources” have confirmed that there is no agreement between the clubs at this moment in time, claiming that someone “jumped the gun” on the news.

He may well have been referring to Fabrizio Romano who reported:

“João Pedro to Newcastle, done deal and here we go! Full agreement as Watford have now accepted final, official bid worth £25m fixed fee, £5m add-ons. #NUFC Deal will also include sell-on clause for 10%. Personal terms already, as been told contract will be until 2028.”

Monster signing

Magpies head coach Eddie Howe will surely be left on cloud nine by this news as it suggests that a deal will eventually be completed.

Whilst Edwards and Bailey have debunked Romano’s claim that a full agreement is in place and a move is set to go through imminently, the latter has claimed that the club believe a transfer will happen.

This suggests that it is merely a matter of when, rather than if, a breakthrough is made in negotiations, which will lead to the player finalising a switch to St. James’ Park.

Howe will be delighted with this update because he is yet to receive any attacking reinforcements in the window so far. Dan Ashworth has brought in three signings this summer and all of them have been to improve the backline in Nick Pope, Matt Targett, and Sven Botman.

How many 2021/22 Premier League goals did Newcastle score?

In Pedro, Newcastle could be closing in on the signing of a promising young “monster” – in the words of journalist Sam Street – who the manager can work with to help him fulfil his potential.

The 20-year-old, who has 21 career goals, is still in the infancy of his career and has shown some incredibly promising signs in the Premier League already.

In the top flight over the last 365 days, Pedro has averaged 2.79 completed dribbles and 3.07 progressive passes per 90 – which places him in the 98th and 91st percentile among players in his position in the top five leagues in that time. This shows that he is one of the best forwards in Europe when it comes to progressing the ball up the pitch.

Along with that, his work off the ball is phenomenal as he ranks in the 99th and 98th percentile for interceptions and blocks respectively, whilst also sitting in the 82nd percentile for pressures per 90.

These statistics show that he has plenty of strong base attributes for Howe to work with and develop and that is precisely why he will elated at the prospect of having the player in his squad.

The Magpies could have a monstrous player on their hands if he can maintain the high standards he has set in the aforementioned parts of his game, whilst also improving on the three Premier League goals he scored last term.
