Newcastle willing to make €40m offer to sign Goncalo Ramos

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their pursuit of Goncalo Ramos in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to the print edition of Journal de Noticias (16/08/2022, page 33), the Magpies are willing to make an offer in the region of £34m (€40m).

The report claims that they are preparing to submit a bid in an attempt to beat off competition from a host of Premier League clubs.

Leeds, Everton, Southampton, and Wolves are all interested in the young centre-forward and may look to beat the Toon to his signature.

Future star

By snapping up a deal for Ramos ahead of their top-flight rivals, Newcastle could find a player with the potential to become a star for the club in the future.

At the age of 21, he is not a player who should come in with the expectation of him immediately hitting the ground running in the Premier League. He has not played for any club outside of his home country and he may need a period of adaptation before he is able to make his mark in England.

This means that he could come in as cover or competition for Callum Wilson initially before replacing the 30-year-old further down the line.

The predator’s record at youth level suggests that the potential is there for him to become a star if he is able to translate it to his first-team performances. He scored 27 goals, along with providing nine assists, in 55 games for Benfica’s youth team – including ten goals in 16 Youth League appearances.

At international level, Ramos – who has been dubbed “prolific” by scout Jacek Kulig – has scored 14 goals in 18 matches for Portugal’s U21’s, after finding the back of the net nine times in 15 games for their U19’s, showing a knack for being able to score regularly.

He has shown glimpses of being able to replicate his form in Benfica’s first team as he has scored 18 goals and set up seven in 63 games. This includes three goals and three assists in four matches in all competitions so far this season for the Portuguese giants.

If he can find the consistency to become a regular scorer at senior level, as he managed to do in his time in the academy set-up, then he could be a star in the Premier League. The forward could be Newcastle’s go-to man for goals after a year or two of developing whilst learning from Wilson, which is why he could be a fantastic investment by PIF for the future.
