Newcastle showing “interest” in Benjamin Sesko

Newcastle United are believed to have Red Bull Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko on their radar this summer, as the search for attacking additions continues.

What’s the word?

As per Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, the Magpies do have an “interest” in the 19-year-old this summer, with manager Eddie Howe having as yet been left ‘frustrated’ by the lack of forward recruits.

The club insider stated: “Another player they’ve got an interest in is Benjamin Sesko from RB Salzburg.”

The northeast side are said to have held talks with the Slovenian’s agent regarding a summer swoop, albeit with fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United also said to be in the running.

The recent suggestion is that the teenager could demand a fee of around £45m, with the Tynesiders having already walked away from deals for the likes of Alexander Isak and Moussa Diaby due to the potential asking prices.

Wood upgrade

While Saturday’s victory over Nottingham Forest saw first-choice striker Callum Wilson get off the mark with a fine finish late on, the Englishman remains a difficult figure to depend upon due to his persistent injury woes.

That fact had seen manager Eddie Howe turn to Burnley’s Chris Wood in the January transfer window, although the New Zealand international failed to truly justify his reported £25m transfer fee in what was a difficult start to life at St James’ Park.

The 30-year-old scored just two league goals in the second half of last season despite Newcastle’s upturn in form, with it hard to look past the 6 foot 3 ace as anything other than a short-term fix.

In Sesko, however, Howe could well find a quality, longer-term upgrade for the one-time Leeds United man, with all the indications pointing to a player of real undoubted quality.

The word on the ground is that the centre-forward could potentially be even better than former Salzburg starlet and current Manchester City man, Erling Haaland, with that fact likely to pique the interest of those back in England.

The 6 foot 4 hotshot may be in the early stages of his senior career thus far, although the £9m-rated ace has already showcased his undoubted goalscoring talent, having scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in 39 games for his current side.

How many 2021/22 Premier League goals did Newcastle score?

Prior to that, the 13-cap gem had fired in 22 goals in just 44 games during a loan spell at FC Liefering, with now potentially the time to make that step up to a more elite division this summer.

As the ambitious new owners look to turn Newcastle into a competitive outfit near the top half of the table, having such an explosive, promising talent in tow could well help them realise that ambition, ahead of a player such as Wood – who has spent much of his top-flight career thus far threatened by relegation at Turf Moor.
