Newcastle United had dreams of signing the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland earlier this year when it was reported that a Saudi Arabian takeover was going to make the Magpies one of the richest teams in world football.

However, it hasn’t quite worked out like that, and the Tyneside outfit have been condemned to another transfer window under the ownership of Mike Ashley.

It’s no secret that Ashley is one of the most despised men in Newcastle these days, but you have to give credit where it’s due and say that United have had a mightily impressive transfer window so far.

We’ve had a go at ranking Newcastle’s signings so far…

 Ryan Fraser 5/5

Ryan Fraser seemed destined to go to a top-six club at one point.

In the 2018/19 season he came second on the Premier League’s assist table, only eclipsed by Eden Hazard of Chelsea, and he had the likes of Arsenal sniffing around him.

Unfortunately, he lost his way a bit last season, culminating in him walking out on Bournemouth before the end of the campaign.

The Cherries’ loss was the Magpies’ gain though as Newcastle signed a player valued at £15.75m by Transfermarkt on a free, and if he can rediscover his form, he will be a big player for Steve Bruce’s side.

Jamal Lewis 5/5

Another player who looked destined for a move to a top 6 club, Jamal Lewis may prove to be an absolute steal for Newcastle.

Liverpool were chasing him earlier in the window, but Norwich held firm, stating that they wouldn’t accept a fee below £20m, but here we are a couple of months later and he’s signed for the Magpies for £13.5m.

Not only does that provide value for money, but it’s encouraging to see the club able to negotiate a transfer more effectively than Liverpool.

Callum Wilson 4/5

Ryan Fraser’s assist numbers may have been the most appealing thing about him, but you don’t get those assists if there isn’t a striker there to finish the chances, and the man who was often getting on the end of his crosses and cut-backs was Callum Wilson.

Wilson is every bit as talented as good as Fraser, and if he can stay fit he has shown that he’s able to hit double figures in the Premier League.

The only thing dragging his score down is his price tag, £20m for a relegated striker with injury problems is a lot, but he already looks like value for money by virtue of the fact Joelinton won’t be starting every week from now on.

Jeff Hendrick 3/5

Jeff Hendrick is a solid Premier League midfielder and that’s about it.

He won’t pull up any trees at Newcastle and he won’t get fans out of their seats or off of their sofas very often, but he will provide a lot of depth and competition to what is already quite a competent midfield with the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, the Longstaff brothers and Isaac Hayden competing for starting roles.

There can be no complaints about signing Hendrick on a free, and this is generally quite a risk-free signing.
