An update has emerged on Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling, regarding Newcastle's interest in his services.

What's the talk?

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Newcastle's new owners, PIF, are eyeing up a 'star' signing for the January transfer window to kickstart their reign on Tyneside in style.

The report names a number of players the club are considering, with one of them being Manchester City and England forward Sterling, who caught the eye at the European Championships for his country over the summer.

Fans would love it

Newcastle fans would surely love it if PIF swoop to sign Sterling in January to be their first marquee addition at St. James' Park as he is a proven, top-class, homegrown talent.

Sterling was one of England's leading lights on their way to the European Championships final. He produced three goals and one assist in seven starts, including a crucial goal against Germany in the knockout stages, which could immediately endear him to English-supporting Newcastle fans.

The ex-Liverpool man is also a proven Premier League performer. In 297 appearances in the top-flight, Sterling has scored 97 goals and provided 72 assists, whilst he has also netted over 100 goals in all competitions for Manchester City.

Former Chelsea player and manager Frank Lampard lauded Sterling during the Euros, hailing him as a great example to young players. He said:

“He’s excellent, I love him as a player. He’s had a dip in form, and he’ll admit that, but what we’re seeing now is the player we’ve seen for the last three years.

"If I’m talking to a young, wannabe winger now who wants to play, he’s an example on the pitch and off the pitch. He’s had tough times, but now he’s coming through it and he looks like a man. He’s just a world-class player.”

This suggests that the £200k-per-week dynamo could be the perfect man to headline PIF's first transfer window at the club. Not only has he proven himself to be an excellent top-flight player over the years, but he sets an example to other players with his application on and off the pitch.

Newcastle fans would surely love to have a well-respected, proven, English forward to be the poster boy of their new era under PIF as it sends out a positive, fresh, image. They would also enjoy watching Sterling run down the wing alongside Allan Saint-Maximin each week, providing goals and assists, which is the most important thing, after all.
