Newcastle plotting swoop for Rennes winger Kamaldeen Sulemana

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Kamaldeen Sulemana in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to The Daily Mail, the winger is now a target for the Magpies as Dan Ashworth plots a swoop to snap up the youngster ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, having already made an enquiry to Rennes.

The report claims that he is valued at £30m by the Ligue 1 outfit, although it remains to be seen how much they would be willing to accept upfront.

It is stated that the club have moved on to the Ghanian attacker after refusing to meet fellow Premier League side Leeds United’s valuation of Jack Harrison.

Allan Saint-Maximin 2.0

By signing the 20-year-old talent, Ashworth can land the club their next version of former Ligue 1 ace Allan Saint-Maximin.

The Magpies’ French magician is known for his impressive dribbling ability, completing 4.3 dribbles per game in the top-flight last term. This came after he completed 3.6 per match the season before, whilst chipping in with eight goals and nine assists in the two campaigns combined.

Now, the Rennes man can offer a similar level of flair on the wing, with talent scout Jacek Kulig recently stating: “Kamaldeen Sulemana was the U21 with most successful dribbles per 90 (4.8) in Europe’s top 5 leagues during the 21/22.”

This shows that he is exceptional with the ball at his feet as he has the ability to skip past defenders and get fans off their seats in excitement, much like Saint-Maximin has done on a consistent basis in recent seasons.

He enjoyed a superb campaign in Ligue 1 as he caught the eye with his displays, leading to Kulig claiming that he is an “enormous talent“. In 11 league starts, he scored four goals and assisted two – creating three ‘big chances’ and delivering 22 key passes in total.

How many 2021/22 Premier League goals did Newcastle score?

These statistics show that he has the quality to make an impact in the final third, despite his lack of starts in the division. He could, therefore, thrive with regular game time and contribute as much as Saint-Maximin at the top end of the pitch, by scoring and assisting goals on a semi-consistent basis.

At the age of 20, he would also be a signing for the future as he has the time on his hands to develop and grow as he gains more experience at the top level. This means that Eddie Howe can work with him to help him fulfill his potential and become a great player for the Toon.
