Newcastle United are exploring the possibility of potentially bringing Conor Gallagher to St. James' Park today following a reported bid from Everton on Monday.

What's the latest?

With the Toffees bringing in around £45m for the sale of Anthony Gordon - ironically to the Magpies - it is claimed they have since made a £40m offer for the Chelsea midfielder, Gallagher.

This comes amid the Toon's believed interest in signing the Englishman this month with a number of Chelsea players said to be on Dan Ashworth's radar.

However, there is a belief the midfielder is keen to remain at Stamford Bridge and prove his worth under Graham Potter but remains of interest to Newcastle.

Indeed, speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Craig Hope has suggested this is a potential deal that he expects Ashworth to be exploring in the final hours of the window:

(6:35) "Now, I think Newcastle would be interested in that if there was a view to it a loan with an obligation to buy. And the bar has been set at £40m/£45m by Chelsea. Would Newcastle go that far? We'll wait and see.

"It's a possibility. It's something they will no doubt be considering and exploring right now and looking at because Eddie Howe is a huge fan. Conor Gallagher has been on their radar for a while now."

Surplus to requirements

Chelsea are making some serious moves in this month's transfer window having already spent in the region of £182m across the month.

And it seems as if they may not be done just there with the Blues looking to break the British transfer record with a possible move for the Argentine talent, Enzo Fernandez.

With this in mind, you do have to question where Gallagher may fit into this Chelsea squad with Potter already having eight central midfielders to choose from.

However, there are reports that Chelsea may already be looking to offload one of those with Jorginho believed to be in talks with Arsenal over a potential move across London.

So it will be interesting to see how this possible departure could potentially affect Gallagher's future with this perhaps meaning Chelsea would shut down any thoughts of an exit for the 22-year-old

But this is certainly a player who could prove to be a wise addition to Eddie Howe's side with the Englishman excelling in his loan spell with Crystal Palace last season.

Across the last year, Gallagher has ranked in highly among other midfielders for dribbles completed, progressive passes received and touches in the opposition box (via Fbref).

However, he has also proven effective this season for the Blues with more shot-creating actions and tackles per 90 minutes than Bruno Guimaraes.

This certainly seems to be one Newcastle are keen on today but it does feel as if a lot would need to click into place to make it happen.
