Newcastle United have had a huge season with a change of owner, a new manager and a complete U-turn in their Premier League season, now they will concentrate on their summer transfer business with an update on a potential transfer target emerging already.

What's the latest?

According to Brazilian news source Jovem Pan Esportes, Newcastle are interested in signing Renan Lodi this summer.

The news outlet tweeted:

"Premier League side Newcastle are interested in signing Renan Lodi from Atletico Madrid.

"The side sees with eyes the possibility of playing for the English club, where he would meet Bruno Guimarães, with whom he played at Atletico."

Journalist Jacque Talbot also revealed how much Newcastle will need to bid last week;

"Price I was told for Renan Lodi is around £42million, but there could be some flexibility around how it’s paid."

He could be Howe's hero

Although Eddie Howe acquired the services of Matt Targett in the January transfer window there has been no official move to extend his stay on Tyneside as of yet and he may well return to Aston Villa in the coming weeks, so signing Lodi would be a major coup for the club.

The £42m ace who was hailed a "hero" by Marca journalist Sam Leveridge, has been a force for Atletico Madrid in La Liga this season scoring two goals and assisting twice. He has also created three big chances, won the majority of his duels (55%) and proved successful in the majority of his dribbles (55%).

That demonstrates that he is capable of being effective in both defensive and offensive play.

Lodi's man of the match performance this season that caught the attention of the football world came in the Champions League against Manchester United when he scored the winning header to put the side through to the quarter-finals of the prestigious European competition, stepping up when his team needed him the most in the deciding leg.

The Brazilian's manager Diego Simeone gave him high praise to the player in an interview, saying:

"Lodi is a hard-working, humble player who deserves all the praise and support."

With that being said, the left-back would be a huge signing for Newcastle's project ahead of them and could become a major influence on the team if he can continue to dominate in big moments and offer the presence on the pitch that he has at Atletico Madrid over at St James' Park alongside his former teammates Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier.
