Newcastle United may look to strengthen their already impressive squad at St James' Park next month, and a new update has emerged from a reliable source ahead of the January transfer window.

What's the latest?

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies are interested in signing Leeds United youngster Cody Drameh.

He tweeted: "Leeds are now fighting to keep Cody Drameh at the club after Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund interest."

"Crystal Palace and Bournemouth are also interested - but Jesse Marsch will push again to keep Cody Drameh by suggesting playing opportunities. Loan, not an option."

He's the perfect Trippier heir

There is no doubt that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will be thrilled with the start that his team has made in the Premier League, as the Magpies currently sit third in the table ahead of their return to top-flight action against Leicester City on Boxing Day.

Indeed, the Tynesiders have been near-faultless in trying to keep pace with leaders Arsenal, with just one defeat over their first 15 league matches of the campaign, although the January transfer window could be an opportunity for Howe to add depth to his squad.

As a result, potentially signing Drameh could be a great piece of business for the club as they continue to develop and build a squad for the future at St James' Park, and the Leeds youngster could be the perfect Kieran Trippier heir .

The 21-year-old talent - who was dubbed "outstanding" by his former Cardiff City boss Steve Morison - has only made one Premier League appearance so far this season. However, while he wouldn't be a first-team starter straight away for Newcastle, he could be part of the bigger picture and the future of a high-performing squad.

Drameh spent last season on loan with Cardiff in the Championship to gain experience and hone his skills, showing glimpses of his capabilities.

Across 22 appearances for the Bluebirds, the young right-back registered three assists and created four big chances, averaging 57.9 touches, one interception, 3.8 tackles, two clearances, 1.1 dribbles completed and 6.9 successful duels per game. He showed that he can be a reliable presence on the pitch in both attacking a defensive play when he is given consistent opportunities to perform.

If Newcastle could seal a deal for Drameh, it would give Howe the opportunity to mould the player into the Trippier heir that the Magpies will inevitably need in the not-too-distant future, as the 32-year-old is coming into the twilight phase of his career.
