Newcastle: Journalist claims Toon could land major coup in Ivan Fresneda

Newcastle United would be landing themselves a real coup this month if they are able to get a deal over the line for Real Valladolid’s right-back Ivan Fresneda.

What’s the latest?

It has been widely reported Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth are on the lookout this month for a new right-back to bolster their squad at St. James’ Park.

And the name which is being heavily linked with interest from Tyneside is the 18-year-old, Fresneda, with Sky Sports claiming the player would be open to a move.

However, there is now believed to be competition coming from Manchester United and Arsenal in Newcastle’s bid to bring the youngster to Tyneside.

With there being a number of clubs said to hold an interest in the 18-year-old, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told Football FanCast that this would be a major coup for Howe’s side:

So if Newcastle could win the race for his signature it would be a major coup for them. And as I said, he looks a real player, he looks like a top player for the future. And I think he’s widely regarded as probably the best young right-back in Europe right now.”

One for the future

Kieran Trippier’s arrival on Tyneside has been one of the many factors which has helped to turn around Newcastle’s fortune with the Englishman swiftly becoming the captain at Newcastle.

The right-back has already provided the Toon with three goals and six assists over his 31 appearances across all competitions in a black and white shirt.

However, it has to be noted that he is 32-years-old now so although he is impressing at the moment, it could change in the years to come.

Do you expect NUFC to land Fresneda this month?

And in Fresneda, it is apparent O’Rourke believes he could become one of the top right-backs in world football in the years to come.

There is not a great deal of action to go off with Fresneda with the 18-year-old having only racked up nine La Liga appearances to date (via Transfermarkt).

However, perhaps it is a testament to the youngster that in such few games, he has been able to catch so many people’s attention with performances like the recent outing against Real Madrid.

Despite coming up against one of the world’s best wingers in Vinicius, Fresneda was hailed after the match for locking down the Brazilian star.

Although Valladolid lost the match, Fresneda recorded a mighty defensive display with eight tackles, three clearances, two interceptions and was only dribbled past once (via SofaScore).

If he is a player who Newcastle were able to land this month, it would be interesting to see whether they would potentially look to loan him straight out or whether they’d look for Trippier to take him under his wing.
