Newcastle United have had a fantastic start to their Premier League season so far, currently third in the league table and now a reliable source has revealed the key areas that Eddie Howe will be hoping to strengthen even further in the January transfer window.

What's the latest?

According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, he "wouldn't be surprised" if Newcastle brings in another winger and midfielder in the upcoming transfer window.

Downie told GIVEMESPORT:

"I wouldn’t be surprised to see them bring in a midfielder and a winger, with one of them being a loan.

"If they can get a loan deal done, then I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what they do."

Eddie Howe will be buzzing

The Magpies have been extremely impressive over the campaign so far, matching Manchester City for the best defensive record in the Premier League and have only suffered one defeat in their first 15 outings.

As a result, Howe will be buzzing not only with his current squad and the clear positive development that has quickly unfolded at St James' Park but the continued opportunity to strengthen his team by adding depth during the winter transfer window.

Supporters would not have even dreamed that the club would be in contention to compete for a spot in the Champions League next season just 12 months ago when they were rock bottom in the league table and facing the possibility of another relegation into the Championship.

Now with the right recruitment strategy when the market reopens in the new year it could give the Magpies a valuable boost that could not only secure them European football but also provide them with the depth needed to compete comfortably in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

In terms of major trophies, Newcastle have not won anything in 67 years other than the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006 and if Howe could deliver victory in either of the domestic competitions they remain involved in, it would be one of the biggest achievements on Tyneside in over six decades.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see just how far Howe can take Newcastle in his first full season managing the squad and if he can acquire the players needed in January, as well as continue the phenomenal form we've seen before the break, then the possibilities are surely endless for the Magpies.
