Newcastle United had a rollercoaster season last time out as a very poor first half of the campaign was saved by Eddie Howe after the club was taken over in October.

With just one win between the start of the season and the end of December, the Magpies appointed Howe in November and saw several new players join the squad in January.

The Toon ultimately ended the season in 11th place after spending a significant period of the campaign in the relegation zone.

One player in the squad that was a rather prominent figure throughout the season was Miguel Almiron, with only four other Newcastle players making more appearances in the league than him.

Despite appearing in 30 league games, the winger could only score one goal and failed to provide an assist for his side.

With that in mind, there's a strong chance that Howe could look to the transfer market to try and bring in a player who would be a significant upgrade on the 28-year-old.

One figure that has been mentioned with a move to St. James' Park recently who could fit that particular bill is Anthony Gordon.

As a product of Everton's youth system, the winger has made 118 appearances for the Toffees across their senior and youth sides, scoring 28 goals and providing 18 assists in the process.

To compare his latest Premier League campaign with Almiron's, the Everton attacker not only scored more goals (4) than the Toon winger, but he also took more shots at goal, hit the target with double the number of shots and completed over double the number of successful dribbles as the Paraguay international.

Even from a defensive point of view, Gordon won more tackles, as well as made more pressures, blocks and interceptions than the former Atlanta star.

This highlights just how much of an upgrade the £18m-rated attacker would be on Almiron, not just in an attacking sense but also from a defensive point of view.

The Englishman even caught the attention of Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, who said that he was impressed by the 21-year-old's "fearless attitude."

Moving forward, if Howe wants to add a young attacker to his side that certainly has what it takes to be a top long-term figure in English football, then securing a deal for the Everton youngster would be a great move for the Toon.
