Newcastle United have been linked with a move with Timo Werner this summer, and now a new update has emerged from a reliable source about the player's future and the club's interest in the player.

What's the latest?

Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has given an update on the Chelsea forward's future amid speculation that he may leave the club this summer.

Romano tweeted: "Chelsea are prepared to let Timo Werner leave on loan and it could also include a buy option. He's in both Juventus and RB Leipzig lists, nothing close to [being] completed yet. Newcastle have not opened direct talks to sign Timo, as of today."

It'd be a major coup

Despite Romano revealing that talks have not begun for Newcastle to sign Werner this summer, there is no doubt that the signing of the player would be a major coup for the Magpies in their bid to improve their attacking threat and goal-scoring opportunities.

There were high expectations of Wener upon his arrival in the Premier League due to his outstanding performances for RB Leipzig, where the centre-forward scored 98 goals and delivered 40 assists over 158 appearances for the club - averaging a direct goal contribution every 93 minutes for the German side - but has failed to find this form at Chelsea so far.

However, there are a number of contributing factors that could factor into Werner's inability to hit the ground running at Chelsea, including the arrival of Romelu Lukaku last summer who, of course, occupies the German international's best position.

The west London club's loss could be Newcastle's gain if they do decide to allow Werner to leave this season, as it is no secret that the North East side are on the lookout for a new striker to boost their goal tally. And, if Howe can be the manager to get the best out of the striker, it could be a dream come true at St James' Park.

To say that the 26-year-old has been a complete failure since joining the Blues would be unfair, as he has scored 23 goals and racked up 21 assists over 89 appearances - averaging a goal contribution every 137 minutes - as well as winning a Champions League, Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup with the Blues.

With that being said, the signing of Werner would be a great piece of business for Newcastle, as his winning mentality combined with his hunger for goals would be a great asset to Howe in his pursuit to push towards the top end of the Premier League table in 2022/23.
