Newcastle set to explore James Ward-Prowse deal

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle’s interest in Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse.

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, the Magpies will explore the possibility of a deal to sign the midfielder in the January transfer window.

The report claims that PIF want to strengthen the midfield options within the squad and have identified the England international as a player who could do just that.

Would Ward-Prowse be a good signing?

Solano 2.0

PIF must ensure that they are able to get a deal over the line for Ward-Prowse as they could find Nolberto Solano 2.0 for Newcastle because of the Saints man’s impressive free-kick ability.

Back in 2015, talkSPORT produced a list of the greatest free-kick takers in Premier League history and Solano ranked at number five. He had a 9% conversation rate from a dead-ball, scoring an impressive seven of his 78 attempts on goal. The Peruvian played 315 times for the Magpies in total, scoring 48 goals and providing 77 assists.

Last season, Ward-Prowse scored a whopping four direct free-kicks from 20 attempts – a 20% conversion rate. He has scored 10 set-piece goals in the Premier League throughout his Southampton career in total, highlighting his incredible quality from those positions.

At the end of last season, Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl lauded the midfielder’s talents, as the Austrian told the Daily Echo: “It’s not surprising for me, a player who played every minute this season is unbelievable.

“His physicality and his performances are outstanding. That’s our captain on the pitch and he is on the way that he is a very important player for this club for the long-term, I think.”

Who scored more goals for Newcastle? An easy one to start...

These comments, along with Ward-Prowse’s free-kick statistics, illustrate why he would be an exciting signing for Newcastle in January. The £75k-per-week beast could be the club’s next Solano with his dead-ball reputation and fans could be on the edge of their seats in excitement every time they win a free-kick within shooting distance for the Englishman.

Ward-Prowse is not a one-trick pony, either. Last season, he made 3.1 tackles and interceptions and created 1.6 chances per game in the Premier League. This shows that he can defend his own goal by winning the ball back whilst also having the quality to create openings for his teammates, to go along with his goal threat from set-pieces.

Therefore, PIF must get a deal done for the England international in January. Newcastle fans would surely love to see the midfielder bolster the squad and would enjoy watching him in the second half of the campaign if the move comes off.
