Newcastle United will likely be sweating on the fitness of striker Callum Wilson, following a recent injury update from England's World Cup camp.

What's the word?

As per the Chronicle, the 30-year-old was forced to sit out training on Monday after sustaining a 'minor knock' while away with the Three Lions, with the former AFC Bournemouth man absent as a select group of players took to the field following Sunday's win over Senegal.

The report does suggest that the centre-forward's absence was simply a 'precautionary measure' with manager Gareth Southgate unlikely to want to aggravate any issue, although it remains to be seen if he will be in line to feature during the quarter-final clash with France at the weekend.

The six-cap marksman has featured twice off the bench in the tournament so far, although was an unused substitute during the latest 3-0 triumph over the AFCON champions in the round of 16.

Real concern for Howe

First and foremost, it will no doubt be something of a concern for the aforementioned Southgate, with the 52-year-old left with only Harry Kane as the only other centre-forward option in his 26-man squad.

While the Tottenham Hotspur talisman is the undisputed leading man through the middle - having started all four games in Qatar to date - Wilson has shown his worth as an asset off the bench in recent weeks, having notably impressed in the opening game win over Iran.

That cameo appearance in the 6-2 mauling saw the £46k-per-week menace unselfishly tee up Jack Grealish late on to add further gloss to the scoreline, having also enjoyed a positive, 30-minute run out against Wales in the final group game after registering two key passes from his 15 touches.

As such, if the Euro 2020 finalists were to lose Kane prior to or during the meeting with the holders on Saturday, it would seemingly hand Southgate a notable issue if he is unable to unleash the Magpies ace in his place.

Equally, as for the St James' Park outfit, manager Eddie Howe will also likely be crossing his fingers that Wilson can come out of the tournament unscathed, with the one-time Coventry City ace having been in fine form so far this term with six goals and two assists in just 11 Premier League games.

With club-record signing Alexander Isak still stepping up his return to full fitness after a lengthy lay-off, Howe will likely be in need of the Englishman to lead the line once club action resumes later this month.

Having so often been blighted by injury in his career thus far - while also being struck down by illness in the run-up to the World Cup - the 5 foot 11 ace could well do without another setback, with the hope being for both his club and his country that this latest knock does not escalate into something more serious.
