An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United and their interest in Bayer Leverkusen gem Florian Wirtz

What's the talk?

According to The Sun, the Magpies are among a number of clubs eyeing up a £60m deal to sign the Bundesliga playmaker.

The report claims that Manchester United and Liverpool are also keen on signing the 18-year-old, whilst none of the clubs have been put off by him sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury this week.

Next level

PIF can take Newcastle to the next level by securing a deal to sign Wirtz. He has the quality to come in and be the star man to lead the club up the Premier League table and has the potential to go further as he develops as a player.

In the Bundesliga this season, he has produced seven goals and 10 assists for Leverkusen. He has averaged a whopping 2.5 key passes per game and created a sensational 15 'big chances', which suggests that he is unlucky to only be on 10 assists.

Wirtz has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.36 over the course of 24 games in the German top flight. This shows that he has been delivering consistently brilliant displays on the pitch whilst also making a big impact in the final third with his ability to score and create goals.

Meanwhile, Newcastle's top scorer in the Premier League is Callum Wilson with six, while two players (Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser) top the assist charts with three. Therefore, the Germany international would likely come in as the main man for Eddie Howe, as his statistics suggest that he would be the club's biggest attacking talent.

Germany head coach Hansi Flick previously showered the midfielder with praise, saying: "Florian is just a huge asset for this team through his carefreeness. He's simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick. He's got a good total package."

These comments further illustrate how much of a talent the teenager is and why he could be able to lead Newcastle into challenging in the top half of the table instead of battling against relegation.

He has shown the impact that he can have in the final third and it is far above anything shown by any current Toon forward, which means that he could win plenty of points for the Magpies with his contributions at the top end of the pitch.

At the age of 18, he also has plenty of scope to develop and improve even further. He has time to recover from his ACL injury and come back to hopefully play for Newcastle for many years to come, which is why PIF must try to get this deal over the line in the summer.
