Nottingham Forest had a disaster over John McGinn

Nottingham Forest had a disaster when they failed in their attempts to sign John McGinn back in 2017. The Scotsman who is now a key player at Aston Villa was at Hibernian at the time and was linked with Forest.

As per BBC Sport (via Nottingham Forest News), the Reds had a £750k bid turned down with Hibs saying that they needed to improve their offer if they wanted to sign him.

In the end the move never materialised and McGinn went on to stay at Easter Road for another season before eventually making the move to Aston Villa for £3m.

Since his move to the West Midlands he has gone on to become a key figure at the club and has featured a total of 141 times for them and been directly involved in 37 goals.

He was pivotal in their promotion back to the top flight and his form in the Premier League since has led to interest from top clubs including Manchester United who were quoted £50m for him as he was dubbed “outstanding” by Steven Gerrard.

Should Forest have signed McGinn?

No

Forest are hopeful of gaining promotion themselves this season, and if McGinn had signed perhaps he would have helped them to achieve it sooner. When you compare him to other Premier League players in his position he ranks highly in some areas.

The 44-cap Scotland international is in the top 7% for crosses into the penalty area and the top 10% for switches which shows the quality he has when in possession of the ball.

He has developed massively since playing for Hibs, but it’s clear that if the Reds would have paid that little bit more to sign him at the time they wouldn’t have regretted it. Mark Warburton was boss at The City Ground during this period and he should have done all he could to secure McGinn’s signature.

The Englishman who is now manager at Queens Park Rangers lasted just 37 matches at Forest and if he had signed the Scottish warrior, maybe things would have turned out differently for him.

Either way, this is something that Forest will be regretting given the success he has gone on to have, but if Steve Cooper’s side get promoted this season then at least they’ll have something to celebrate.
