They may have finally scored, but it was a familiar tale for Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night, as they fell to yet another defeat in the Championship.
Chris Hughton’s side headed into the game against high-flyers Norwich off the back of five games without a win, and picking up anything at Carrow Road seemed like a tall order.
And despite showing a bit of character to pull things back level with just over 15 minutes to go, the Canaries struck just a few moments later to seal all three points.
One man who didn’t enjoy the greatest of games, was Sammy Ameobi. The 28-year-old signed by Martin O’Neill back in the summer of 2019, has endured an awful season thus far, scoring just once in 16 games in the Championship, and managing no assists whatsoever.
And Wednesday night was more of the same from the winger, getting into some dangerous positions but failing to produce any real end product.
Countless times Ameobi decided to go it alone when he could have played it into left-back Yuri Ribeiro on the overlap, and his teammate would surely have been fuming with the kind of selfishness on display.
As per Sofascore, Ameobi lost possession 21 times over the course of the 90 minutes, by far the most of any Forest player on the night. None of his four attempts on goal found the target, whilst all three of his crosses into the box didn’t find its mark either.
The 28-year-old’s performance rather summed up his Forest career; flashes of magic but no real consistency, and that must be infuriating for fans.
With the club really in the relegation mix, they need players to step up and be counted, and Ameobi just didn’t do that against Norwich.
Meanwhile, Forest must surely start this rising star over the coming weeks.
