Nottingham Forest are set to make an offer for "superb" midfielder Joe Rothwell who is out of contract at Blackburn Rovers this summer.

What's the story?

According to John Percy of The Telegraph, Forest will make an offer for Rothwell regardless of what happens in the Championship play-offs. He has also attracted interest from West Bromwich Albion.

Rothwell has been at Blackburn since 2018 but it was confirmed yesterday that he would be leaving the club when his contract expires along with Bradley Johnson.

He's been unable to agree terms on a new deal that would have kept him at Ewood Park.

Taking to Twitter, the journalist said in full: "NFFC are interested in signing midfielder Joe Rothwell, who is a free agent this summer after leaving Blackburn. Forest will make an offer to Rothwell regardless of what happens in the Championship play-offs. WBA are another club interested."

Perfect replacement for Garner

Rothwell would make the perfect replacement for midfielder James Garner who is expected to leave the club after his loan spell and return to Manchester United.

The 21-year-old has been a revelation since he joined on loan from The Red Devils last year and has made 41 appearances in the Championship for Forest, being directly involved in 12 goals during that time.

His impressive displays have earnt praise from many, with United midfielder Bruno Fernandes recently saying that he is a player for the academy that he looks forward to playing with.

New manager at Old Trafford Erik ten Hag would be a fool not to include Garner in his plans.

Rothwell on the other hand has made the same number of appearances but has been directly involved in 13 goals, and having such similar statistics is one of the reasons why he would be able to slot in nicely at Forest.

Blackburn will be gutted to lose a player of his talent and it's a surprise that more clubs aren't interested in the 27-year-old who would be available for free.

If you compare him further to Garner, Rothwell makes more passes on average per game and also has a higher pass success percentage.

He's one player that could come in with the capability of repeating the performances of the England U21 international. It would allow Cooper to rest easy and focus his attention on improving other areas of the team ahead of next season.

If they don't move for him quickly then it won't be long before others get there first.
