Nottingham Forest have been linked with a move to reunite with James Garner throughout the transfer window, and now Steve Cooper could land his dream transfer this summer as a new update has emerged on the player's future at Manchester United.

What's the latest?

According to The Athletic, Manchester United are ready to sell their young midfielder for £14m this summer and will let him go permanently if the right deal arrives.

Nottingham Forest are named as one of the many clubs interested in Garner, however, the report goes on to say that after sufficiently covering his position at The City Ground it remains unclear whether the club will revisit a move for the youngster.

It could be huge for Forest

There is no doubt that the permanent signing of Garner would be huge for Forest if they could secure his signature, as it would add a player back into the dressing room who not only has a sound understanding of how Cooper operates but also inject that winning mentality from the promotion challenge last season.

With so many new players joining the squad, it isn't easy to maintain the spirit that existed in the changing rooms at Wembley stadium when Forest earned Premier League promotion in the play-off final after sitting in the relegation zone when the Welsh manager joined the club less than 12 months ago.

However, if Garner did reprise his role in the Forest squad it would certainly reignite that fighting spirit that could be crucial for the team in their Premier League challenge, and he would surely be warmly welcomed back by his former coach.

It is no secret that Cooper is a huge admirer of the 21-year-old talent, after spending the entirety of last season raving about his young loan player, hailing Garner when analysing his development:

"I knew him from his England Under-17 days, where he was captain, so we had a relationship before here.

“He has been excellent, over recent months he has been a high-performing player in the team.

“He has been a constant selection for us."

Back in July, it was reported by The Athletic that Cooper was still hopeful of getting the midfielder back in the fold at The City Ground, but following a loan move for Dean Henderson it proved impossible to complete whilst Man United were unwilling to part ways with Garner on a permanent basis, but now the manager could finally get his man.

With that being said, the signing of Garner would be a big addition for Forest, handing them not only Cooper's dream summer acquisition, but a great prospect for the future of their midfield.
