Nottingham Forest: Richards can be Cooper’s own Alphonso Davies

Nottingham Forest are set to complete the signing of Omar Richards in the coming days and the left-back could be Steve Cooper’s own version of Alphonso Davies at the City Ground.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is in its final stages after Forest agreed a €10m (£8.5m) fee with the Bundesliga champions, with just the personal details to be sorted out before he makes the permanent switch.

The former Reading left-back made just 17 appearances in his debut season at the Allianz Arena, although it was perhaps always going to be tough for him to oust fellow left-back Davies, considering his reputation as one of the top youngsters in world football.

However, with regular football at Forest next season, fans will be hoping that Richards can emulate his Canadian teammate’s style of play, as FBref suggests that Davies is the third-most similar player to him in terms of style of play.

Richards excelled last season in both attacking and defensive aspects, scoring in the 99th percentile of full-backs for pressures and tackles per 90, while he scored in the 98th percentile for pass completion, progressive passes and completed dribbles, which emphasises that he is an all-action left-back who can contribute a lot going forwards.

WhoScored suggests that both Richards and Davies’ main strengths include passing and dribbling, while both are described as players who like to dribble and play short passes.

Therefore, the similarities between the two players are clear to see and at while Richards is three years older than his fellow left-back, he is still only 24 and has plenty of time to improve and reach his potential.

Given that Forest are paying just £8.5m to sign him, and Davies is currently valued at £63m by Transfermarkt, the Reds look to be getting a real bargain.

Richards has previously been dubbed a “great prospect” and Forest look to be getting a top player, so Cooper will be hoping that he can replicate the form shown by Davies at Bayern Munich and hold a similar standing to the young Canadian in the coming years.
