Nottingham Forest closing in on double swoop

Nottingham Forest are set to raid Championship play-off final opponents Huddersfield Town for the double signing of Harry Toffolo and Lewis O’Brien.

What’s the word?

As per respected journalist John Percy, the Midlands outfit are all-but set to bring the pair to the City Ground, having agreed on what appears to be a bargain £10m fee with the Terries for both men.

Writing on Twitter about the imminent deal, the transfer insider stated: “#nffc have today agreed a double deal with #htafc to sign midfielder Lewis O’Brien and left-back Harry Toffolo. Fee for both players around the £10m mark before add-ons etc. O’Brien and Toffolo due for medicals on Monday”

This follows the news that the newly-promoted side have also completed a deal to sign Costa Rica international Brandon Aguilera from Alajuelense, albeit with the 19-year-old set to return to his homeland to join Guanacasteca on a six-month loan before moving to England.

Cooper will be buzzing

That arrival of Aguilera – as well as the expected incoming of the two men from the John Smith’s Stadium – will take the club up to ten new additions in the current window already, with manager Steve Cooper having been handed significant backing ahead of the club’s first Premier League campaign since 1999.

In Toffolo and O’Brien, the former Swansea City boss will be adding two figures who starred during Huddersfield’s surge to Wembley last term, with Forest set to rub further salt in the wounds of their showpiece opponents by signing the duo.

The latter man has been courted by clubs across the top-flight over the last few months, with it set to be a notable coup to land a player who has been dubbed “exceptional” by former boss, Carlos Corberan.

In 43 Championship outings last term – all of which came as starts – the 23-year-old chipped in with three goals and three assists from his central midfield berth, while also proving himself a quality defensive presence having averaged 2.2 tackles per game.

As for teammate Toffolo, the 26-year-old also enjoyed a fine 2021/22 campaign from his left wing-back berth, netting an impressive tally of six goals and seven assists from his 42 second-tier outings, with the former England U20 international also averaging two clearances and one tackle per game.

Stan Collymore - Nottingham Forest

Who did Forest sign Stan Collymore from in 1993?

His arrival will seemingly provide competition for fellow summer signing Omar Richards on the left flank, with Cooper having previously been forced to deploy versatile midfielder Jack Colback in that role on occasion last term – a move that would not have been sustainable next season despite his admirable form.

As for O’Brien, he will bolster a midfield department that has been depleted by the return of loanee James Garner to parent club Manchester United, with the 21-year-old having been integral to the promotion push last term.

Bringing in those two new faces will strengthen Cooper’s ranks considerably, however, with the 42-year-old undoubtedly buzzing at the continued backing he is receiving ahead of his first full season at the helm.
