A battle in which Andy Carroll can emerge on top of the pile?

Liverpool fans will be hoping that Andy Carroll’s brace against Manchester City at Anfield in the Premier League on Monday night will be repeated time and time again for the Reds next season and beyond. Alongside Luis Suarez Liverpool have two real goal threats, but will the England forward be able to become that 20 goals a season striker in the top flight that you need to be a top, top club?

On the basis of Carroll’s form this season for both Newcastle and now Liverpool, Andy Carroll is priced at 10/1 with bet365 to land the Premier League Golden Boot next season. bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth says “Carroll paid back some of his £35m price tag on Monday night and his partnership with Luis Suarez is showing early signs of bearing fruit.” But will Carroll be Liverpool’s main goal scorer, or more of a provider for Suarez? We’ll have to wait and see.

‘What about the race for the Premier League Golden Boot this season’ I here you ask. Well that is well and truly a two horse race, with Manchester United’s Dimitar Berbatov ahead on 21 and City’s Carlos Tevez tucked in close behind on 19 goals. Given that Tevez picked up an injury at Anfield, Berbatov has to be clear favourite even though the Bulgarian striker isn’t an automatic starter at Old Trafford.

Next in the top goal scorers list is Aston Villa’s Darren Bent on 13 goals alongside Carroll, with Newcastle’s Kevin Nolan (the highest scoring Premier League midfielder this season) and Arsenal’s Robin van Persie one behind on 12. Perhaps next season a real contender for the Premier League Golden Boot award could be Chelsea’s £50 million man Fernando Torres, because as soon as the Spaniard breaks his duck his is sure to score a hatful!
