Football FanCast guest columnist Reggie Thompson feels that Tom Huddlestone’s England call-up is a fitting reward.
Tom Huddlestone’s call up to the full England squad was fully deserved and a fitting reward for the big man’s performances this season. Fabio Capello said months ago that Huddlestone could play a big part in England’s future and now he has finally been given that opportunity.
I know Tom Huddlestone splits opinion among supporters and whether he has the mobility in central midfield, but the international scene is perfect for him. It is all about keeping possession at this level, being able to pick a clever pass and as we know there are few in the game that are better at it than Huddlestone. I know to non Tottenham fans his selection may be looked upon as somewhat of a surprise, but Huddlestone certainly has the potential and if given the opportunity is unlikely to let anyone down in the midfield.
Thankfully Huddlestone still remains a Tottenham player, as there was a time when I thought he would seek pastures new. Had Redknapp not been up against it with injuries in pre-season and the start then I am sure that the player would have moved on as Tom said he needed first team football to stake a claim for the international set-up. Much of Huddlestone’s uncertainty did in fact spawn from Capello’s statement that he saw the player having a big part to play in the international set-up, and why I felt Fabio’s words were untimely as they clearly unsettled him, I’m just relieved that fate played its hand in terms of injuries at Tottenham and gave him the starting platform he so craved. He deserves this opportunity to stake a claim for the World Cup squad and if past form is anything to go by; he won’t be letting anyone down.
