A £10m luxury that surely Harry and Spurs can do without?

Football FanCast guest columnist Paul Shannon feels that Kranjcar is a luxury that Spurs can do without.

With the club having a reported £40m to pay back by August it is fair to say that Portsmouth will have little option this summer but to cash in on players or face the indignity of facing possible administration.

There is certainly some talent to be had at Fratton Park and Harry knows better than most having assembled it with Peter Storrie. He is also acutely aware of their contract statuses and no doubt his former Chief Executive is giving him the heads up of possible moves and incoming bids.

Rumours have been rife as always with Harry and Spurs in general, and sure enough we have been linked with a variety of players from all corners of the world; some good, some bad and some damn right ugly (Sorry Crouchy). I don't what it is with this media obsession with us in particular but it does reach a point where you just don't believe a thing you read and who is right or wrong – today's link has been Niko Kranjcar and why normally I would sweep this kind of talk, especially from the Mirror under the carpet, I have it under good authority (who is rarely wrong) that the Croatian along with Glen Johnson are Harry's top targets this summer window – Johnson I would take definitely, but Krancjar, surely at £10m is a luxury that we can do well without?

As much as I admire the Croat and the abilities he seemingly brings to a team I ask the question as to whether he is actually any better than what we have already got at WHL. He is a gifted footballer, a wonderful passer of a football who can open up a defence, but then so is Modric, Huddlestone, Jenas has that when he wants to and of course you have Lennon on the right. If Harry has designs on playing him on the left or the centre then it makes me wonder what he plans to do with Luka in the team. There is no possible way Modric will be given a free role with Keane now back at the club playing the same role he adopted previous to him joining, so the need for us to bring the Pompey ace seems pointless to me and serves no other purpose than simply a waste of resource, unless Harry of course has plans to sell on Luka that we don't know about. I know which player I would rather have in the centre alongside Palacios or out on the left.
