FanCast columnist Harry
Buxton wonders if a move for Patrick
Viera will prove such a bad thing for Arsenal.
With Arsene Wenger celebrating his thirteen years at
the helm it gave us all a chance to look back at yesteryear and all the great
players that have donned the Arsenal shirt – there have been plenty during his
tenure, however his two outstanding purchases have to of been one of his first
ever signings Patrick Viera and a certain Thierry Henry.
Both Frenchman were a joy to behold to watch and
were pivotal to the success we enjoyed in the first half of this current decade
and in my opinion neither has been replaced. Perhaps that is the reason we have
had such a lean time of late, I'm not sure, but the loss of two talismanic figures
was bound to have an effect of some sort. While both went on to seek pastures
new, their futures have taken a stark contrast, where Thierry has gone on to be
a European champion with Barcelona, while Patrick has had an indifferent spell
in Serie A; he has won titles there, but he has hardly been a key figure or
player in any of the successes.
It was nice to see Thierry talk of a return to
Arsenal at some point and although the chances of that happening appear slim, Patrick
is a different kettle of fish altogether and no doubt the reports in today's
French media talking of his discontent with life at Inter will once again see
him linked with an Arsenal return. It is sad to see Viera being used sparingly
as a bit part, even more so as he lost his place in the French team as a result
and being his last real opportunity to play in a major tournament, you do feel
that January cannot come soon enough so he can get some regular first team football.
The big question still remains as to whether Arsenal should take him back?
They say it is a bad practice for players to return
to the club where they enjoyed their former glories, however I really believe
in Viera you have a player who isn't returning for sentimental reasons, but
would arrive back in the same way that Rush did at Liverpool and Hughes did for
United in really having a point to prove. He is going to be incredibly hungry
to succeed, determined to win his place back in the French squad and therefore
we can only benefit from his return. With Song set for the African Nations in
January, we are certainly going to need cover and with Viera he needs no
introduction as to what is required from him at Arsenal and the Premier League
in general and as well as filling in what is a known void in this team, he'd
also bring some much needed leadership to the team that is sadly lacking. Even
if it is only a short term deal, until the end of the season, I don't really
see how we have anything to lose and it could end up being a win, win for everyone
Should Wenger look to put Viera out of his misery to
fill the void in the Arsenal midfield?
