Alberto Aquliani: an understatement of mass proportions?

Liverpool’s Alberto Aquilani has admitted that he owes the Merseyside club for a season which saw the midfielder plagued by countless amounts of injuries.

The Italian is willing to prove his worth to the club next season as he looks to make amends for his absence, which prevented the player from settling into the club…an understatement of mass proportions? Many will think so.

The 25-year-old Italian arrived at Anfield last summer from Serie A side Roma for £17 million (plus bonuses) but never kicked a ball in a Liverpool shirt until November due to injury (4 months after he signed for the club).

This season, Aquilani managed to notch up 25 appearances in all competitions as well as 2 goals along the way for his club already, despite suffering setbacks. His Premier League record so far stands at 19 games, 1 goal and 6 assists…not a bad ratio at all for the Italian.

The Liverpool no.4 has been strongly linked to a move back to Italy with Juventus leading the chase, but the midfielder believes he owes the club more for such a topsy-turvy season. He told Italian newspaper Leggo:

“I am staying at Liverpool to make up for many things. I have finally recovered from my ankle injury. Juve have approached me in the past and now I’m reading of their interest, but I really don’t know anything about it.”

Aquilani’s recent statement will come as no surprise and shock to Liverpool fans. The midfielder certainly needs time to settle and be given a good run in the side that’s for sure. If he can do this then he may feel he can produce better things next season.

The player himself will also feel he has a lot to prove and change his label as a ‘flop’ sooner rather than later. Even though he hasn’t played much, fans (Liverpool and neutrals) will feel the Italian has the potential to be a top draw player. In the games Aquilani did manage to play this season, he certainly showed that he is more than capable of handling the English game.

With the money spent to sign ‘the little prince’ (as he is known in Italy) Liverpool fans would have expected more from the Italian. However, a number of them may allow more time for the player to refocus on his fitness and become injury free before casting any sort of judgment.

It is very noble to see and hear that Aquilani wants to stay and prove his worth to Liverpool, because let’s face it; the midfielder could easily abandon ship if he wanted to…credit to the player.
