Whilst United fans will be sitting down writing up their wish list for next season, Fergie will only be thinking about sealing the services of his star player.
Wayne Rooney has been in the form of his life this season and has netted 33 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions. United’s No.10 has been a consistent performer for United for several years now, although this season he has been performing at a different level. Fergie will be desperate to keep his talisman at Old Trafford and tie him down to a long term deal this summer.
There has been speculation in the media that Wayne Rooney maybe the next star making his way out of Manchester, to help service the Glazers huge debt. Real Madrid are just one of the clubs reportedly planning to try and prise the United star away from Old Trafford and despite the club cashing in on Ronaldo last summer, you do sense that they’ll resist any offers for the 24-year-old.
Wayne Rooney has already stated that he is happy at Old Trafford and Fergie will be keen for the United hierarchy to pull out all the stops to secure his future.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Rooney stated:
“I have two years left on my current contract so talks haven’t started yet on a new one. But I am sure after the World Cup we will sit down and speak about a new deal.”
Rooney also reinforced his commitment to the club recently by telling Fergie to bring in a new strike partner for him next season:
“There is me, Berbatov and Michael Owen. There is Federico Macheda too, but if we can get one more top forward in it would give us the right balance.”
It appears Wayne Rooney is adamant that he will be wearing a United shirt come next season. Many fans will be pleased to hear that their star-man wants to sit down and discuss a new contract after the climax of the world cup, but surely Fergie should look to tie up the striker’s contract before the competition begins in June.
If Rooney performs well (which most probably he will considering the season he’s had) in the biggest football spectacle in the world and bags plenty of goals, then his price tag will increase immensely within a couple of weeks. Not only that, but top managers across the world will stand up and take notice, and will possibly look into the idea of acquiring the services of the United star.
For these reasons stated above it is absolutely vital that Fergie ties up Rooney’s contract before he boards the plane to South Africa.
