Arguably the best £20m Liverpool have spent in years

Football FanCast guest columnist Jim Baxter hails the model professional that is Fernando Torres.

If I was Ian Rush I would be a worried man, because there is no doubt in my
mind that Fernando Torres will break every one of his goalscoring records at
the club. El Nino is clearly here to stay and that is great news for every
Liverpool fan.

Fernando Torres has been a breath of fresh air to the English game and while
his temperament can be a little suspect on the pitch, with the odd act of
petulance, off it he represents a well grounded footballer who clearly
understands his responsibilities of being a model professional and one who
shows a real appreciation for this footballing gift he possess.

There is no showbiz or glitz about Fernando Torres and others could
certainly follow his lead about how you conduct yourself as a professional
footballer. While the likes of Adebayor tarnish the image of the game with the
way they court the press and get caught up in their own self importance, Torres
is someone who clearly understands the values of loyalty and who would always
put his team and employers first before any self gain or promotion. That is why
he stayed loyal to Atletico Madrid for so long and it is something that
Liverpool fans can look forward to now, despite what other offers might come his
way.

"I have four more years on my contract
and I am really happy,

"I don't think about going back to
Spain. I don't know how I will feel in a couple or 10 years but I am really
happy in England and I would like to play here for a long time."

Liverpool is clearly where the heart is
now for Fernando Torres and the Reds are fortunate to be in possession of
arguably one of the top strikers in Europe. Torres is certainly the best in
England and providing that Liverpool can get the rest of the team components
around him in working order then there is no reason why the Merseysiders cannot
go on a sustained period of success. I believe in time he will go on and smash
everyone of Rush's records and if he does stay on for another 7 or 8 years as
suggested then he'll arguably represent the best £20m the club has spent in
years. Torres is a class of his own, both on and off the pitch and everyone's
loss is very much Liverpool's gain.
