Any team turned over on Boxing day has the chance in this Premier League midweek to put the world to rights again. And for Arsenal that’s surely a category they fall into.
Thrashed 4-0 by Southampton at St Mary’s on Boxing Day, the Gunners have the chance to avenge that defeat whilst also reigniting their title bid which has faltered after defeat to Chelsea.
Arsene Wenger has been blaming Diego Costa’s antics for his side’s failure, but sometimes the Gunners only have themselves to blame, at the moment, with Manchester City lacking some discipline and momentum and only Leicester really looking like title challengers, Arsenal will never get a better chance to grab the Premier League title by the big handles and lift it triumphantly into the air.
Southampton, meanwhile, are climbing quietly up the Premier League ladder. They sit only three points behind sixth place and a spot in Europe again next season, and with inconsistency up ahead, if they can put a few wins together, and new signing Charlie Austin can get amongst the goals, they have a chance of springing a surprise, given that they were pottering around midtable only a few weeks ago.
This game may not be crucial this season, but it will be important for momentum. Here are the teams:
