Football FanCast columnist Billy Pearson wonders what Arsenal should do with William Gallas.
Arsene Wenger was very forthright this week with regards to the future of William Gallas and his desire to get a new deal secured in order to prevent him leaving us on a Free at the end of the season. I guess he has been here once before with Flamini and he is obviously fearful of lightning striking twice.
I don’t want anyone else feels about Gallas and although 12months ago I never I thought I would be saying it, I agree with Arsene that we need to get him tied to a new deal. Whether it was the captaincy that was weighing him down, but as soon as Wenger moved the armband to Cesc, Gallas slowly started to return to his best, which has certainly been noticeable since Vermaelen moved in alongside him and suddenly we have a settled pairing in defence.
Obviously we don’t know what the situation is with Gallas and whether he wants to remain with us or seek a final last pay-day elsewhere. Talking to some at the game today they were of the opinion that there is no way in the world he will sign a new deal given the criticism he has had levied at him in the past by some supporters and the fact he wouldn’t pass up the riches that will come his way with a Bosman move. I guess it depends whether the club are prepared to match the kind of numbers that are likely to be on offer; history suggests that they probably won’t.
So what should the club do with William Gallas and should they give him an offer he can’t refuse? Would you be glad to see him run down his contract and see Wenger move elsewhere for a younger model in the mould of his current partner Thomas Vermaelen? I personally would keep him, just for the reason that he and Vermaelen have a decent understanding.
