Football FanCast guest columnist Leon Richards wonders what Rafa should do with Fabio Aurelio.
To say that Fabio Aurelio's time at Liverpool has been disappointing is tantamount to saying that the Arctic is a bit nippy, as the Brazilian has failed in the large part to set the team alight as we thought he would, when he was reunited with his former Valencia boss.
It has not all been Aurelio's fault as he has been plagued by injuries throughout his time, but as a Liverpool fan I am still uncertain as to what he brings to the table and whether he could in fact be a vital addition to the squad; I mean we do see the odd flashes of brilliance, but then the next few games he goes missing. Is Fabio merely struggling as he hasn't been given a regular run in the side, or is it simply that his game isn't suited to the higher intensity of English football?
The reason I pose the question is that Aurelio's contract is up for renewal in the summer and with the player able to negotiate terms with other clubs in a little over two months time, Rafa faces up to a dilemma as to what to do with the Brazilian. Aurelio has come out this morning saying he is keen to stay as he and his family are extremely settled in England, but should Benitez be looking to retain his services, or should he look to cash in on him in the January window? It is a tricky one in my opinion, as there are still question marks that surround him, but what do you feel Rafa should do?
