Champions League Preview – Wednesday 17th February

FC Porto v Arsenal

Porto are a team that nobody will have wanted to face. Why? Because they are unpredictable. On their day they can be a match for the majority of sides in this tournament and they have made a habit of reaching the knock out stages consistently. Arsene Wenger’s side will have to be very wary of the Portuguese side and will probably see a draw as a good result.

Arsenal travelled to Portugal with a host of players missing. Andrey Arshavin misses out because of a hamstring strain, as does Eduardo, while William Gallas is also left out due to injury. Manuel Almunia and Alex Song will not feature either.

Porto could be without playmaker Ruben Micael who has been a key player since his arrival in January. Striker Hulk should feature despite serving a domestic ban since December 20th.

Probable Line Up’s

Porto (4-3-3): Helton, Bruno Alves, Maicon, Fucile, Rolando, Guarin, Belluschi, Rodriguez, Falcao, R Merieles

Arsenal (4-3-3): Fabianski, Sagna, Vermaelen, Campbell, Clichy, Diaby, Fabregas, Denilson, Nasri, Walcott, Bendtner

My Prediction: Porto 1 Arsenal 1

Goals: Nasri, Alves

Bayern Munich v Fiorentina

The Italian’s are one of the form sides of this season’s tournament. A double over Liverpool in the group stages will have given them a lot of confidence and they will believe that they can go far in this tournament. Bayern qualified from the group in sensational style with a 4-1 win against Juventus. After topping one Italian side, the 2001 Champion’s will be full of confidence and determined to get a good result in the home leg.

Bayern Munich welcome goal-machine Miroslav Klose back into their squad

Fiorentina have won just one of their last 7 games in all competitions and will look to turn their season around. They travelled to Germany without key defender Alessandro Gamberini who dislocated his shoulder in their league fixture against Sampdoria at the weekend. Midfielder Mario Santana is also out with a calf injury, as is Christiano Zanetti. Striker Adrian Mutu is serving a ban.

Probable Line Up’s

Bayern (4-2-3-1): Butt, Lahm, Van Buyten, Demichelis, Badstuber; Van Bommel, Schweinsteiger; Robben, Klose, Ribery ; Gomez

Fiorentina (4-2-3-1): Frey, Comotto, Felipe, Kroldrup, Pasqual; Montolivo, Donadel; Marchionni, Jovetic, Vargas; Gilardino

My Prediction: Bayern 2 Fiorentina 1

Goals: Vargas, Robben, Gomez

Will Bayern’s form prove the difference with Fiorentina stuttering or will the Italians provide another upset? State your predictions!
